I'm almost done with this 180 build and finally see the light at the end of the rainbow. I'm really set on having a Chocolate Cichlid or 2 in the tank and looking for tankmates to go with them. I really would like another good size cichlid (or 2) to go with them and maybe a good schooling fish (not silver dollars).

Give me your thoughts on tankmates or the mix you would think might work:

1-2 Chocolate Cichlids (must)
polleni (really want one)

Salvini
Vieja Syn.
Rokteil Severum
Red Severum
Uaru
bocourti
Firemouth

School:
Tiger Barbs (15-25)
Black Tetra (15-25)
Buenos Areas (10-20)
Tinfoil Barb (2-4)
Giant Danios (8-15)

Just trying to get this planned out and wanting to get some input...and no i don't want all those shools, just one :)

Lets say you go with 1 Chocolate Cichlid. Now if you go with a mated pair, it is quite possibly going to prohibit you from any other fish. 2 of the same sex would be possible if you want to go with other tankmates.

1-2 Chocolate Cichlids (must) +1
polleni (really want one) Possible. It is an african cichlid that gets very aggresive depending on the one you get. It might kill your chocolate. It definitely won't mix with the sevs or the fm.

Salvini Yes
Vieja Syn. Yes
Rokteil Severum Yes
Red Severum Yes
Uaru Yes
bocourti Yes
Firemouth Maybe, probably won't be aggresive enough.

School:
Tiger Barbs (15-25) No will be eaten
Black Tetra (15-25) maybe
Buenos Areas (10-20) maybe
Tinfoil Barb (2-4) Yes!
Giant Danios (8-15) Yes!

Go with the chocolate, tinfoils, danios, sevs, bocourti, vieja, and urau. nice tank!

i have a gold sev in with my choc, they have a love hate relationship. They never really fight with each other but if one go's into the other hiding spot there will be a bit of a scuffle....sometimes the swim together sometime the mouth off at each other. My choc took ages to grow on me, now i love him, i almost took him back for the first 6 months he used to hide behind the filter 99% of the time and was very skittish and scared of my O, now days his colors are looking great and he comes out more then 50% of the time and has some balls now to, awesome fish and will eat any thing!

nice tank

Thanks

Yea, i've been keeping fish for 30+ years and have had alot of different types, but never a chocolate. Just trying to get ideals to go with them...since i've not experienced them and i'm taping into others knowledge.

I miss my big Chocalate sooo much. He had the best personality and got along with everyone else in the tank (mostly sevs.) The only thing I could caution is if you decide to get a pair. I picked mine up @ 8" at my LFS. He was there as a trade in because someone tried to pair him up with a female and he tried to kill her. I think they are very aggressive spawners.

Yea, a pair of any cichlid can be hard sometimes :) I might get 1 and a Uaru also, still haven't decided.

Sounds awesome.

I have a Chocolate in my 150 with an Oscar and its a good mix. From your list, I would go with the Chocolate and a few Rotkeil Sevs.

As far as schooling fish, maybe look into Roseline sharks. They stay smaller than say, Bala sharks, but they have awesome color and are very tight schoolers. they stay around 5 or 6 inches.

The Uaru would take care of both big cichlid and schooling fish. I would recommend keeping them in groups and not with anything too aggressive.
