Chocolate cichlid...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive just read an article on chocolates. It says both are chocolates so im not sure 'true' is accurate. It describes temporalis as the greenish/ reddish colours, whilst coryphaenoides is brown. Both are genus Hypeselecara. Maybe mine is the 'true' species that fwprawn refers to? Mine does look more elongate which fits the profile too.

the term "True Chocolate" traditionally and historically applied to coryphaenoides, and the "other" or "false" chocolate is the temporalis. I just stuck with that.

The coryphaenoides is brown, yes, but also has bright, light tan, or white marbling patterns. Hopefully somebody who has the "real" thing can post some here.
Temporalis come with all shades of browns, tans, oranges, "purples" - as you can see here.

Two fish are currently classed Hypselecara. Hypselecara Temporalis the Chocolate cichlid we are refering to and the most common in the trade and H. coryphaenoides which is rarly encountered. When we refer to the Chochlate we are refering to Hypselecara Temporalis.

I know but on fwprawn last post he stated that temporalis are not the true chocolates that why it is confusing

There is no TRUE and FALSE Chocolate cichlid. Hypselecara temporalis is the fish I posted and the fish you have IT IS NOT A FALSE chocolate cichlid. Hypselecara coryphaenoides is another speces found in a different location with different coloration and is sometimes refered to as the Rio Negro Chocolate cichlid. It is neither true or false it is what it is a different fish. They are less common in the aquarium trade. Common name confuse the issue, make no mistake about what you have it is a Hypselecara temporalis.

Great thanks for clearing that up!

What is the size and approx age of the fish you posted?

About 5" thereabouts. Not sure on age. It was this size when I got it a couple weeks ago.

Of the two, I prefer the temporalis, it is a beautiful species. Aquanero cleared up the confusion well. The two have traditionally both been referred to as "Chocolate Cichlid", but coryphaenoides always got some sort of modifier to its name.

Judging form the picture and size I would Guess at female but that is at best an educated guess and could prove to be wrong. Time will tell. I would also wait a few weeks with good food and clean water to see it color up a bit more.

Agreed. The temporalis would always be my choice out of the two and may be why they are more common in the trade. There seems to be no population differance in the wild. Other than having somthing different I see no more of and attraction.
