I've kept Chocos and have never had a shy one. They have all had beautiful maroon swirls of color too. I like em, they are zesty but not over aggressive.
I have a Chocolate in a 125 gallon and yes they are a bit shy at times but the colors are just amazing. I can't remember who it was that said they would take a GT over a Chocolate anyday but you obviously haven't kept a full grown chocolate. Gt's are cool and all but they are a dime a dozen.
I would have to agree that a large GT is quite a site but it just takes so damn long for them to grow! I would have a GT again if they grew faster. I would like to keep a chocolate cichlid. They have always been on my list of things to keep just never got the chance.
i do think the chocolates are under rated, i had some many years ago and have two temporalis now that appear to be two females, i see eggs that never hatch. but they have a beautiful colorl and a nice peaceful disposition that i really enjoy.
Hysp. temporalis are colorful; but the "original chocolates" hysp. coryphonides are a little drab for all but true cichlid lovers. Coryphonides are also more aggressive. I wish i could find these again. temproralis are seen often where I'm from. i like both though.
