Chocolate Cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I adore mine. She acts like a super laid back Oscar, she's in with my Tiger Oscar. She doesn't come up fast begging like my Oscars yet she doesn't spook either. When I walk up to the tank she just calmly swims right up to the front and stares at me waiting for food. I've found my 'favorites' are based on personality and not looks. Athough I do happen to think she's gorgeous, like shaded copper-brown.

there are 2 different chocolates//////////temporalis and coryfenoides

I'm pretty sure the ones at my LFS are temporalis. Is $14.50 an okay price for a 2-3" fish?

I'd pay it and pat myself on the back all the way home. I looked at every fish shop I passed for over 8 months until I found my Chocolate 8 wks ago. That was before I'd ordered many fish online and didn't know who to trust. Mine was at a really bad fish shop and they wanted $50 for it, she was 4". I made her bag it up on the spot and didn't even look at any of the other fish then. To me it was well worth $50 because I wanted one so bad, I'd have had to pay that much for shipping online anyway.

Yeah, must be lucky;)

Anyone know their growth rate?

not sure but pretty sure its pretty good being a common cichlid. I'm sure they'll be 6-8" within a year or so. Probably about the same as a jack dempsey or green terror, maybe faster since they are larger.

Mine went from 2 1/2" to 6" in like 3 months. Slowed down a little now though.

Don't have photos readily available unfortunately, but if you've got the time and want to check growth rates.

February 2, 2008. 3 days after I bought him from a shop that had basically killed him (he was brought home in 15c water from a seperate system after being dropped from his original bag, also very underfed).

Both shots taken in mid-July. I'll get some decent ones now. He's currently 7".

Wow. I've seen a lot of pictures of them, and they seem have a lot of variation in their coloration. Neat. This is bumping them up the list of which fish to get! ;)

The fish shop mine came from had a nitrate reading of 180 ppm or more (had to cut with tap water to measure). They said they'd had her for almost a year and she was only 4" (total), I've had her 8 wks and she's 5 1/2" (total).
Here's mine right after I got her then 3 wks ago. (I love Chocolate pics <g> Nice fish, Japes!)
