Chocolate Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I didn't sex mine, I actually adopted them from a store that was giving up on fish. They started breeding around 3" and that's how I sexed them lol.

I always passed them up at the store because they were drab in coloration, but I was mistaken. As they grow they get some nice green and red mixed in with the brown. Also, their easygoing temperament makes them ideal for mixing with other fish when compared with more aggressive cichlids! They're kind of like very peaceful oscars, but their behaviors are a bit less goofy than oscars.

Nice! And around 3 inches? Wow. I'll probably store fry in the 20 long and eventually sell them off back to my LFS

You more than likely have temporalis since coryphanoides is rare in the hobby. Jeff Rapps is the only person I'm aware of that has coryphanoides. Honestly, temporalis is look better in the opinions of many.

Temporalis is a taller bodied fish with red and greenish hues around the head a shoulder areas with a steeper cranial profile. They are easy to keep and you'll enjoy them.

Yeah you should definitely consider keeping at least one. They are quite peaceful and turn into beautiful fish. Here's a poor video of mine (towards the end you get a real nice look at him).
