Mine always ate from the surface. Floating pellets from Kensfish were the staple, but any insect that I found around the house would be gobbled up quickly.
You should stop feeding the crickets and nightcrawlers for a while and concentrate on getting it on pellets then you can treat with thother foods on occasion. The pellets should be the main diet. Try getting it on NLS.
