Great, thanks for the votes & inputs.

seems like 48x18 is the winner. Now i'm wondering what I should do w/ the 85... hmmm

Wider is only better if you first have the proper length. Length is always the first consideration. Since 38" is to short for a full grow midas then the wider tank is not better.

Go with the 48" tank.

I like L rather then H

Considering both tanks are the same "H", not sure what your getting at.

You realize he could end up having a tank that is not eve 3 times the length of the fish. Talk about no running room:(

Not too much different that ppl keeping Aro's in 72-84" tanks?

If the fish lives a happy life vs. being killed or mistreated then I say it's ok. Sure it may be better to have a longer tank, but some just don't have the room. Doesn't mean that this fish will have a terrible life. In my case, he is treated like a king and has the freshest water imaginable. I am not saying put a Midevil in a 10gal, but IMHO a 10-12" fish can be happy in a 36x18-24 tank. I am sure I will get slammed for this, but oh well.

I agree no arowana should be kept in a tank that is less then 3 times it's body length. This is for arowana though, not sure why this comparison since body types are completely different. For large cichlid, 5-6 times the body is ideal 4 times should be the minimum. A 12" cichlid in a 36" tank is freaking cruel. If ya can't get a larger tank, then keep smaller fish :duh:
