choosing a water pump?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Okay, So I went on and checked out Big Al's .. I'm between two pumps on their site now while theres free shipping on.

Mag drive 9.5 http://www.bigalsonline.ca/BigAlsCA/ctl3664/cp18139/si1316751/cl0/suprememagdrive95utilitypump .. 950 gph, ($160 taxes in and shipped)

Quiet one 4000 - http://www.bigalsonline.ca/BigAlsCA...0/lifegardaquaticsformerlypentairquietone4000 .. 1017 gph ($135 taxes in and shipped)

im on a budget so every single dollar counts. is the mag drive guarenteed worth an extra 25? or is the quiet one even possibly better?

oh, and does anyone think i could get away with 780 gph? .. the quiet one 3000 would save me like almost $50 if that was enough pumpage
My understanding is that the GPH of the pump should be determined by the desired turnover rate for your tank size. For my 240 gallon tank I wanted 4 turnovers per hour requiring a pump capacity of a minimum 960 GPH . I purchased a pump capable of 1050 GPH because my limited experience is that pumps rarely if ever achieve rated capacity. After installing it, a real test of the pump with all plumbing in place was closer to 1000 GPH.

FWIW, I just bought a Rio HF20 from Big Al's for $104.99 CAD.

So far it is running perfectly, and it's really quiet.

I cannot vouch for it's track record though, as I'v eonly had it hooked up a couple weeks. But for a budget, it's a pretty good price for the close to 1000GPH it will do with a 3 to 4 foot head.

i ended up just going with the mag drive. ive heard such good stuff about them .. got free shipping and 5.00 discount so it came out to $150.29 taxes in and shipped (CAD) .. so thats not bad from all the good reviews ive heard about this pump. from you guys with these pumps .. any advice on how to keep them in shape and up to par? .. first time ill be using a water pump anyway
