Choosing an Asian Arowana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If I have a chance to get one, which I will never ever get, I will go with HBRTG because SR and XBack need tanning.

just my opinion

HBRTG or RTG as I was told they are less prone to PLJ,gill curl and drop eye. I never wanted an asian aro before due to the defects they can get but my RTG has been good with no issues. Helps if you have them in a big tank to start as small tanks and poor maintenance can cause drop eye and gill curl. I think PLJ is more of poor genetics.

Get a Super Red/ Chilli Red...........and around $1000

Crossbacks are just nicer RTG's/HBRTG's.......you pay at least double what a Red costs and only thing that might cross is your fingers waiting.......

Abt Xbacks compared to RTG/HBRTG, it's actually not so simple. There are many details like shine, gold intensity, full pearlies, GH. There are actually big differences. To anyone who knows his arowana's, the difference is huge. And it is not a matter of if it will cross but how much it would cross. Anyone who has nv seen in real life adult Xback shouldn't make comments that they rather get RTG/HBRTG. I have owned an abult RTG and now an Xback and see them in my LFS/ friend's houses all the time, it's like comparing apples to orange, mono to kelberi, carp to koi. And all this without tanning.

Reds on the other hand will normally look dull without constant tanning, some with look so pale they look like grade 1.5s. It is so important to tan them that most red owners end what with a tanning light across the middle of their tank switched on 24/7 and blocking the full view, on top of that, they use pink nan lights to cheat the eyes to make the fish look redder then it actually is. That being said, reds will get much bigger then xbacks and if correctly taken care of and displayed the right light, will look more amazing then golds. These are what the pros do. It's alot of work and sacrifice to make them look gd. BTW, over on my side of the world, reds now cost more then golds, not too sure why it cost double over there, be careful not to buy 1.5 grade reds, they are worthless. Even less then RTGs. Best reds come from Indonesia. I would avoid those frm other countries at the moment.

Just to show what i mean that they need tanning, I have stolen some pics and a video from the same red under different owners.

This is the red when it was with a previous owner who tan his red. This is under normal light.

This is what a real pro could achieve with alot of tanning and tlc.

What a gd xback looks like WITHOUT tanning, while tanning can help with gold aros they are not necessary. WTT is more important for golds. I have nv seen and RTGs or HBRTG reach this standard before.

Gold base (this belongs to someone I know and is one of my favorite golds.)

None of the above fish belong to me. But the next one does

My Gold XB, no tanning, normal white LED lights. 10 mths old from tag. Still a very young fellow.

I'm not criticizing your choice of a red as they do get bigger and can look better then golds, but I wanted to point out that the image that northern Americans/Canadians seem have of the XB is so low and I can't understand why anyone would pick an RTG over an XB.

stunning fish! it's nice to see Crossbacks with good shine not in a white tank. what lights are used on the above Xbacks & which farms did they come from
