Hi,

I have this ten year old yellow lab that gets chronic skin ulcers/open red sores. I treat him, gets cured and they come right back within a month.
Successful treatments included Jungle Anti Bacteria Medicated Fish Food. Worked great the first time, not so great the second time around. Then I tried API Furan 2, worked great and quick, fish was haelthy for a month and now its back. Fish has been isolated in a 20g tank throughout this ordeal. I keep the water clean. I am out of ideas, i have resorted to adding aquarium salt and mela fix to the water yesterday, lets see what happens.
Thanks for any other suggestions.

Hi,

What are the water parameters?
Tank size (previous tank)?
Tank mates (in previous tank)?
Temperature?
What do you feed the fish?
Pics of the affected areas?

I'd only advise using salt for now. Avoid using other meds at this point. How did you dose salt so far? How is the fish now?

Is it the only fish suffering ulcerations? I'd swab the sores with either hydrogen peroxide (only once!) or iodine solution/betadine. Use Q-tip or cotton balls to do the job and swab the sores gently. You can try Biobandage if you have access to it.

Yes, it is most deintley the only sick fish, all other are in great shape. I dont know what happened to this poor guy.
thanks for your help.

After some extensive research, I am positive that the problem is Hemorrhagic Septicemia (Aeromonas hydrophila).

What is the best commercial med available to cure this illness?
I already tried Furan2 and it was not very effective.
I am really not comfortable with using swabs as treatment.

thanks

The HP didn't work on the ulcers? What was your course of treatment in the last two weeks?

I did not attempt the HP swab, I do not feel comfortable with it...im afraid he will jump and fall on the floor.
I have him in a bare 20 gallon with Aquarium Salt and Mela Fix. I see good improvement but he is not 100% cured. He is eating REALLY well, he has a ravenous appetite....i changed his food to NLS Thera A and he has become strong, quick and alert. He seems to be heading in the right direction. I just picked up some Triple Sulfa. I will perform a 50% water change and try the Triple Sulfa...i have a good feeling that it will be the last piece of the puzzle.

It's worth a try. Normally, when you do topical treatments, you need a firm grip on the fish while applying topical. It's not that difficult though.

Thanks for the help, I will post results from the triple sulfa. Right now it seems that the salt + mela fix + NLS Thera A combination has yielded great results. And after taking a good look at him tonight, i may continue this and hold off on the meds a few more days.
