Ive raised all type of odd ball fish and none was a satisfying to me as just about any type of cichlid. When I decided to get back into the hobby after 20+ years my first choice was a Midas cichlid due to personality and I have not regretted it!
They are just so interesting...They have so many different looks and diff varieties....There is a cichlid for everyone(i love JD) unless you dont like cichlids
CA/SA cichlids are the main fish in all my tanks (except my betta tank at work) . . .
I lean towards more peaceful ones, like port cichlids, blue acaras, gymnogeophagus, rams, etc., . . . I've also kept tougher ones, like oscar, JDs, GTs and Texas . . . and of course I've had convicts and firemouths
only thing I haven't kept - - and don't plan too - - are African rift cichlids, or any of the bigger SA/CA cichlids, like Dovi, Midas or Jaguar
Currently I have the following, Tiger Oscar, Texas Cichlid, Pink Tilapia, Nicaraguan Cichlid, and a very young Red Devil. They are watching me right now and that's a big part of the appeal. They interact beyond the boundries of the aquarium, they take food from hand, they display individual traits, they display more complex social structure than other fish and of course the variety and beauty that others have mentioned. Someday I'd like to get a pair of Dovii if I can manage the appropriate home. On the opposite end of the spectrum I love guppies!
I started on aussie natives and went through africans americans and ended up on hybrids like flowerhorn etc. I still have a wide variety and think they are some of my best fish. I have rift lake cichlids from malawi and tanganyika, central americans and south americans, aussie natives, catfish of various varieties, hybrids, and pures. the cichlids are the most commented on fish I have from guests, you cant beat their colour and personalitites. the biggest problem with cichlids is there just isnt ever enough tanks to bring all the ones you want home...
