Yes they do i have fake plants just to see if they would not bother them cheaper But I want live plants good luck the cichlids just enjoy rearranging their space

They tend to have little regard for anything that gets in their way when they decide to bolt. I use some live plants in mine and they get beat up alot. Mondo grass is pretty tuff but grows slowly. I get it at Petsmart real cheap. Dunno if Mondo grass is an actual plant but thats what Petsmart sells it as.
I have a full planted tank fairly heavily planted with my mono, TSN and 7" pike cichlid as well as other 3-4" bottom dwellers and they arent too bad with the plants. A few times a week I have to clean out the tank for plants that have been unrooted or broke off but not to the point that I want to give it up. The color is great and I think the fish love it.
I have some plants in with mine. Not sure if it's them or the Polys that keeps uprooting them. I gave up rooting them so their all just floating around in the tank.
