Cichla kelberi sp Sao Francisco

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you're in SG, did you get some of those F2 araguaia ? those looked very promising!

They are F1s actually, parents are WC. I have 2, currently still not anything to shout abt yet, I have not been very successful recently with the newer batch of frys I have been growing out, development has been slow, maybe also party due to me mixing them in with my big bass so soon I think.. I know a hobbist who has amazing ones at 9" but he went the pure feeder route. I raise mine mostly on cut shimp. They are at 7" now.

thanks nid for the info! your pinima looked alike as our pinima when small, but the 4 inch specimen, wow kinda different looking. our pinimas at 4 to 5 inches looked like these....

very good info coz since pinimas are caught in multiple areas, im guessin they will have their own different physical traits. very good info indeed:) thanks for sharing, yeah hopefully we get to see that fish again :)

I managed to find and steal a photo from my LFS of the Pinimas when they were abt 9" to 10" haha. I wouldn't do this if we wasn't friends but I still hope he doesn't find out haha. The Brachyplatystoma Vaillantii is 11" if you want to compare.

a)if you breed 2 different species like piquitis and kelberis, will their fry all look the same? or some would have more kels, and some have more piquiti traits? i stared on all the kelquitis that recently came in and found that they had all the same traits, not one was different from the other.
b) okay so we have two good examples of hybrids that look somewhat alike at the moment. but for example i get one adult kel, and and adult piquiti, and try to breed them, will their offspring look like these kelquitis and sao frans too?
c) wtf happened to number 3 fish???? i want her so bad!

If these are f1s of the hybrid, yes, every fish from the same batch should look slightly different. I have seen this with Kelrinos. Some take on more of either parent's gene. But I believe Kels have weak genes as I mostly saw orino in kelrinos. Ron's kelrino is the first kelrino I have seen to have the anal spangles of a kel. I actually got a free one waiting for me to take home as my friend is giving up his, I'm not keen on hybrids but am super curious how they would turn out. I might just take up his offer. The only thing stopping me is I can nv get rid of it since it's a gift. Arghhhhh... not too sure what to do.

maybe these are the off springs of the super yellow azuls. who knows....nice fish nonetheless.

updated pics of our sao frans. seems like nothing has changed with the markings, probably grew 1/2 to 1 inch since the last pics though.

sorry for some crappy pics, went to jose's in the afternoon so relfection from the glass made it hard to shoot.
anyway its obvious number one and number two look alot alike. Kelquiti-like features for sure. but there are also some slight differences like bar placement, head shape still undetermined. but number 3 totally looks alot different from the first two, although you can see some traits like the faint bars in between the 3 bars, the spangling is all over including on the head, also you can see that numbe 3's tail markings are different from one and two. so im just curious on some stuff.. and since these guys are not in the new species characteristics, we can say first that they are hybrids... some questions in mind are...

would it be possible that the people down in Brazil or wherever they're keeping these fish, kept several different species together in the same pen, or ponds, and they bred, so maybe even within a batch, different species, hybrids can all come out? I've even heard before that pinima were bred somewhere in Brazil in the past.

that is an amazing photo with amazing fish in i. Just get rid of the ugly datnoids and you have a perfect south american tank, lol

That's exactly what I was wondering- the two I have look pretty similar to each other except for a couple of things (uneven spacing between bars, slightly different gold color); and they look very similar to yours. But that third one.. I might've missed it, but did it come from the same batch as yours?

yes the third came from the actual 5 that came in 5 months ago. so ive been shoing pics of the three sao fransciscos. the other two i have yet to see since i picked mine up, its around our area but pics cannot be taken for owners privacy. maybe i can sched a trip there to see but all i can do is describe them in detail.

these are the kelquitis that came in recently. so far i think every one looks the same.

what i observed back then as well were mole like black dots on the sao franciscos. i remember i had to return the fish i got and change it to this one because i saw some mole like markings, then when i got home, my fish also had them but had the ability to fade on or off hehe. and the faint greyish blotches too were showing already at this size... brian/dammitkhoa, you can monitor yours and do a progression thread. well at least do a new thread? hehe

To demonstrate how big a difference hybrids look from each other, I'm posting 3 videos of kelrinos. I dunno if they were from the same batch but it's most likely same parents as I only know 1 person breeding them. I won't be surprise that this kelquitti would turn out very different from each other as they grow. All videos are not mine, one bellows to fellow MFK member Ron Tan, hope he doesn't mine me using it.
