Hi all, i have been wanting a few Cichla for a while, i love the Orinoco but are big money over here, that is for a large one at around 12 inch and the ones i found were over £300, not one for sale in a smaller size , i have been looking for some others and came across the Ocellaris, i have been lookibg for info on just these but nothing is coming of much help, i will be keeping them with a couple of rays and a TSNxRT and aro`s, the ones i have found are around 3-4 inch so from what i know they are in good size as i believe the very young are hard to grow on.

Anyone give any info on these type as in size grow to and growth rate, temprement feeding etc

The chap is also getting some Temensis in a month or so, i was thinking of getting 2 of each.

Oh nearly forgot, i googled for info and the ones that come up that said they are Ocellaris looked different in pattern, is this common?

Thanks wayne:):)

Ocell's grow to 24''+
Growth rate varies from owner to owner, depending on your water changes and feeding, your soon to be Ocell can reach up to 15'' in the first year.

Temperament: Really chill fish, not really the type to cause real problems with other tank mate, but will fight with other Pbass. Not to the point where you might have to relocate them, just your typical squabbles.

Feeding: Pellets, shrimp, feeders, frogs, rat, bats, cats, ETC...not really picky eaters IMO/IME. But I just fed mine shrimp, pellets and silverside.

Spend the money and get an orino....while occels are nice...orino's are the ish!

Would love some but i much rather get young fish and as said i cant find any young over here and the places i have asked either cant or wont get them imported. I will get 2 of the Ocellaris and keep looking for Orino`s, no big rush as i in the process of still sorting the big tank for them.

What size tank do you have?

I would NOT buy the temensis as the grow very fast and will grow to reach 3 feet within a 2 year's or 3. They can easily reach 2 feet in a year if provided adiqute tank space and food. I would not buy temensis unless you have a 1000g at the least. I would recomend that you try and obtain the Orinocensis as they are very beautiful and will max out at 24''-26'' giving the care and love they need to reach full adult potential.

Well they will be going into a 500g (UK) 7x4x3 in a few months and in a year or so they will be going with the TSNxRT and rays into a tank of 1200g-1500g base around 12x6 (UK)

Well it sound's like you got all that covered for sure. The Tem's would not be a problem at all in that case. I am pretty sure you can stock that tank with all that you have listed comfortably. Just wanted to be sure before I gave any advice with out knowledge. Of course you understand.

I understand why you asked kida, i will have a look around for some Orinocensis, like i say though for some reason most of the better Cichlid are large over here and big money, i would love to get some but as soon as the next tank is ready for stocking i am hoping to get some more rays or a asian aro.

Well for sure you have a enough tank space for any of the species of cichla for sure and Ray's and Cichla look great alway's. Since we can't keep Asian Arrow's here in the States I can't tell you how that will work out but we do have a few members here who keep all three together in Canada. There are a few memebers who keep cichla that will hopefully chime in that are from your side of the pond also with these combo's. I do know that there were some really nice Brokopondo Ocellaris exported from US to your side. I am not sure where they ended up. But your search should be very promising. It's not cheap by anymean's. But I think it is well worth the investment for sure! Welcome to the Cichness of Cichla keeping and good luck with the search. If you can find anything worth buying in your LFS (Local Fish Store) I recommend buying it.

Again I didn't mean to be rude with my first response I just wouldn't want to tell you to get something that you would regret buying within a year.
