Cichla ocellaris; info needed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't know how to sex pbass so I'm not totally sure but they were wild mono's. I equate the less problem with two because one was the leader and the other was the follower and ok with that. They had one or two scuffles but I broke it up and they didn't really hurt each other. Just battling for position.

I have a tank full of wilds now and it's never a dull moment. The one who I believe is in the higher position(larger and attacks everyone) is always got a problem with some other cichla in the tank.

For what it's worth.

Sounds like a great tank! Thanks for the advice. I hope that in my case the two will be relativily piecefull together.

Guys, a friend of mine is getting a couple of cichla ocellaris and i might get one of them. But, before i do so, i'd like to get some personal experience feedback on these guys.
I have 2 tanks to put it in, depending on the cichla's behaviour.
Is it wise to keep only one?
Can these guys go well with other fish? Are they dominant/agressive? Ive read they can go well with everything that doesnt fit their mouth, is this true?
How are they during feeding? Will they eat everything like shrimp, mussel and pellets? Will they be puppies like my datnoid?
My datnoid is currently boss in my tank and i'd hate to see him get busted by the cichla.
Any info or anwsers to questions above are well appreciated.

Hi,

are you sure that they are real C.ocellaris? If they are, you should be happy. :)
But only one specimen is not a really good solution. I keep three of them since 2 years, from 5" till now 15"-16" and they we`re never aggressive against each other, they really like the association with the others. I keep mine together with big Loricariids like Pseudacanthicus sp. L25 and Hypostomus margaritifer and it works very well. Other cichlids are not so good, cause there are two options: If they are too small (Geophagus) they will be prey for the Peacocks and if they are too big (Astronotus, Hoplarchus) the Cichlas may be domineered by them. I feed them with little feeders and sliced, frozen Tilapia-filet. Unfortunately they ignore every other food I`ve tryed. My other Cichlas like C.temensis or orinocensis had been fed with shrimps, artemia and other frozen food since they were babys, so they swallow that also today with a length of about 10"-15".
I think that you`re Datnoides will not be harmed by them, cause they`re real pussies! :)

Hope this will help you a bit.

I forget something:

Sexing is a bit difficult. The males have an other headshape when they are about 13" to 14". Females have a more slender head and the males get a red "cap" on their head when they are "horny".

I have an Ocell and an Orino that are housed with 2 Plecos, a Silver Aro, and a CK. The Ocell is a pig. Doesn't like to let anyone get any food once I drop it in, but he gets along with everyone. He's the larger of the 2 Pbass that I have.
