Gangster- Answer-
Om my grow out 240 gallon 8 foot tank, I run a single FX5 but I built a custom spraybar that spans the entire length of the tank with drilled holes every 8 inches so the return water is evenly circulating in the entire 8 feet of tank. Plus the spray bar is just slightly about the water line so it jets fresh oxygen directly into the water so I don't have to run an extra powerhead or air pump. I am a Genius!!!

Nerd.

I have no clue what type of filters you all are talking about. I need to see those one day so I can understand what yall are talking about. I'm a visual learner :)

I've got a question.

How long do cichla live?
How old is your oldest?
Who has the oldest?
Anyone who's got a little bit of cream in there tank that's over 10 years old deserves a medal IMO - any takers?

Okay Hawaiian. I draw for you.
Based on the above discussion, I picture this.

Arrty has a boat load of ceramic in the overflow box and sump. He uses the Ultima as mechanical filtration.

kendragon has a glass filter for mechanical and biological. Keep in mind Arrty has a way bigger tank and fish so apples and oranges.

My set set up is internal overflows they handle 6000 gph then my glass filter is on a closed loop i actually drilled my tank the drain is set 5 inches from the bottom the return is on the opposite side of the tank Again set 5 inches from the Bottom 1 1.5 inch providing another 3000 gph for a total of 9000 gallons per hour all fully filtered mechanically and providing Bio..........There are AMillion ways to do it Guys it's just what ya want!!!!

Geez Kendragon thanks for drawing my acrylic tank to look like a real hot tub with wooden panels!!! LOL Classic!

Thanks for the reply Hugh and Artty! I need a glass filter in a major way...as well as a few new tanks.

Artty your fish speak for themselves.

Ken add azuls to your list of fish that need really high water quality. I have issues w/ them and HITH even though im doin wc's of 50_70% 3x a week. I also think diet and stress levels(tankmates), have a factor in the cause for hith.

So these are just basically sumps. And instread of bio balls or scrubbies, u guys use crushed glass?
