Cichla Stocking

-adding a sump may be a good idea, but i would have to check the cabinets underneath the aquarium if there is space for it, how big a sump would i need?
- i had to google what a closed loop system with UV is, looks very interesting but i do not have any idea how to do that! haha.
- can my filtration be more simpler like an external canister pond filter?

ok, i checked the tank again this morning and realized that a sump cant do because the storage underneath is full already with stuff. (the condos property) also it will not be visually pleasing with tubes sticking on the side of the aquarium going up. ( i was not allowed to puncture holes in the bottom of the tank.) so i guess i have to make do with a filtration system that i can leave on top of the tank.... i went to my aquarium stuff supplier and they had different pond filters. problems are a) it barely fits the top of the tank b)too expensive for the budget c) pond filters might be too heavy for the top of the tank.
water change will not be an issue because the maintenance guys said they would do partial water changes as frequent as is necessary, but still, proper filtration is essential. so i was thinking to do i diy pond filter to and place it on top of the tank. that would solve budget issues and pipes sticking on the sides of the tank. i would have to make a diy filter that is just about 25 inches in height but i think its possible. anyway if you have links on great diy pond filters, pls tell me. im putting pics also of the top of my tank where the filter will be placed, and the picture of the pressurized pond filter that was just too expensive:( thanks!

Are you kidding? Those are the cheapest pond filter one can get.

yea seriuosly! that budget needs to be adjusted to the real world lol
if they want a nice tank they need to drop the cash! i would tel them you need to clear the stuff under the tank. lol
but you can try a swamp filter over the tank??? that would work really well. and you wont need a huge expensive pump.

i guess cheap is very relative ken, it really depends on the situation and the budget given.. in this case, unfortunately, the price of these filters, which is bout $230 is way too expensive for the budget. i think with a diy pond filter, the price would considerably go down a notch or two.

Sorry. I guess I over reacted. Just that I construct a lot of ponds, big and small. Filtration is where the budget should be spent. Without a good one the stock will suffer. I hope the budget includes a UV because one side has sunlight exposure.
Check a few koi websites to get an idea of price. $230 is not high.

oh i wish that the budget can be adjusted! of course i want the best for this tank but here in the 3rd world we should do with what we have. Down here the minimum wage is $9... for a whole days work. just want you guys to compare how much you are earning compared to how much normal people are earnning here. :)

no prob bro, yeah i totally understand where your going. cant really rely on the budget the condo gave me, it would probably just amount to the pump, the air pump, and the diy filter and filter media. thats about all i can do with the budget. the pressurized filter w/ uv though, i can probably get with my own dough probably 2-3 months from now. the holidays are coming and can't really spend that much on my hobby yet, spent too much for the fishes already haha.
so for now i hav to make do with a diy mechanical and biological filter. it probably won't stock a lot of cichlas but im just really excited to build this tank!

that is incredible!! im moving there but keeping my job here! lol
but that really does put things in perspective.... i really think a swamp filter will be your best bet man! plants are the best filter!
you just build a trough about a foot wide and as long as the tank and add a pump that pumps water into one end of the trough and just let it flow back into the tank at the other end. so in the trough you add egg crate and fill it with sponge and a bunch of different water plants
they will eat up all the amonia and nitrite/trate so you only prob after that is detritus on the bottom which can be cleaned once a week or you can add a few large power heads for water movement! the plants will also add oxygen to the water.
i think that would be the best thing for your budget!!
