You sure it was the temprature causing this? I never noticed any difference in behavior, or color. I personally, always keep my big Cichla on the lower side. In the case of an outtage or something so they do not stress out as much, due to the decreasing water tempratures. If I had them at something like in the high 80's.

If your going to drop the temprature, do it slowly. Dropping it from the high 80's to mid 70's can cause the lethargic and color issue, I am sure. Maybe over the course of a few water changes, you could sneak in a drop of a couple degree's.

My tanks at 79-80* right now. I use a controller to mess with and maintain the temperature of my tank. I played with the temps a few months ago because I was having some major aggression issues in my tank and I decided to see if the temps would affect it.....I forgot what I found out  but I think I settled on 79-80* being the best for my tank. The time the temperature dropped to 74* the tank was running as it usually did. only difference was that the room the tank was in was colder than usual and the heaters (i've added a heater since) couldn't keep the temperature up. Not sure what else it could have been. Maybe it was the sudden change in temps.....who knows. time to experiment.
