I think there's one thing you might be missing with some of the explanations. Being described here are cichlasoma, ex-cichlasoma, and 'cichlasoma'. Note the ' around the last one. Cichlasoma was previously the larger genus for most american cichlids. That genus was then broken down and separated. From it all of the genus' we now know were started. They left cichlasoma to be the genus of the port cichlids. For the fish that do not fit/ or have not been fit into a proper genus to this point are referred to as ex-cichlasoma OR 'cichlasoma'. Those last two describe the same basically unclassified cichlids. It's just two different ways to say the same thing.
