My pleasure - it was a great trip and I highly encourage folks to go.

I have my grow-outs in a tank with a big anubias and I suspect that if I'd give them room that they'll spawn on the leaves. There was a lot of water hyacinth in parts of the La Pedrera site but we caught more apistos there than acaras. I have the large pair in a divided tank to preserve their fins. They can be pretty rough and tumble on each other...

Matt - thanks so much for sharing the information and putting things in perspective. I suspect that this pair were collected from the same site. They have a lot of blue - male in the scales and female in the fins - and Felipe sent these to Scott. It's really nice to see their native environment. Maybe I should show your pictures to them :)

You mentioned that you collected the small ones in a more vegetated site, which makes a lot of sense - I think these guys are actually leaf spawners. I offered caves, river rocks, and driftwood. They are the dominant fish in the tank and can pick wherever they like. What I didn't expect was that they actually spawned on an amazon sword leaf! Probably got ~400 free swimming fry and half were saved and given to Ken. They are cleaning the same leaf as I type this.....action expected soon :)

Mine are actually quite tight, and defend their corner together....must be because the tank is overstocked :D

I have 5 of the grow-outs (now 2-3") in a 2'x2'x1' with some chanchitos (who are more boistrous)... I need to get the chanchitos out of there and give them some active but relatively peaceful tankmates...

If you ever want to rehome the chanchitos (you have A. oblongum right?), definitely let me know ;)

Dude - I have like 6 kinds of chanchitos (oblongum, local, red cuaro, canada de sauce, santa lucia, red ceibal - off the top of my head :) ). Each is different - behavior, breeding habits, coloration, etc. - and housed separately to keep them from mixing...

I've had most of them breed - just need to get some time to set them up for breeding (vs. breeding and getting their fry eaten). Chanchitos are kinda funny - great parents when there is a threat and terrible ones when their isn't. I've started to put pairs in a divided tank with other fish on the far side to make them think there's a threat when there really isn't.

I've probably only got more types of acaras and Archocentrus-type fish than chanchitos...

Share share! :D I only have two species - red ceibal and scitulus. Two red ceibal just paired up ...still waiting on the scitulus (aka pigs). Would love to have some oblongum :)

My were breeding (and eating their babies) every other week until I added some Laetecara on the other side of the divider (and they swam through it)... and they've stopped breeding.

Back to the drawing board :)

Oblongum are my only non-Uruguayan ones and are very different (quite peaceful, less robust) than the others. Red Cuaro and others from the north are some heavy hitters that would tear the oblongum to shreds.
