I'm going to be getting a 55 gallon tank fairly soon from a friend. And I've been having trouble deciding what I want to do with the tank.

I realize the fish will eventually probably grow out of the tank, and be more comfortable in a larger one. Which when the time comes, I won't hesitate to find a larger one for them to go into.
But I would really like to get either a young Oscar, a young Cichlasoma pearsei, or raise a couple BGJD to try to pair with my EBJD(hoping it makes it to adulthood), if not then even breeding two BGJDs in the 55 gallon.

If you have any knowledge over these options I'd like to hear what you all think :)!

Especially the Cichlasoma pearsei! I can't find very much information on these guys, but they look AWESOME!

I thought that they got pretty big, but then I saw some places saying less. They just look big too.

Anybody know if they grow pretty fast or fairly slow?

Oscars can stay in a 55 gallon alone for awhile right?

I had pearsei that outgrew a 150 gal tank in less than 2 years, from 3" juvies.
its not just length, they are bulky and tall, They are mostly vegetarian and my 4 pearsei would go through a head of romaine lettuce at a sitting, and I was doing 50% water changes every other day.

Pearsi will grow about an inch a month with weekly water changes. You could grow them up from 1" juvies in a 55 for about 6-8 months before they outgrew it.

you could get a pearsi as long as you know that later down the line you will have to upgrade to a 75, and im going to be totally honest with you, most people who get a 55g cichlid tank end upgrading it to a 75 even if there stock don't NEED the extra space.

Chocolate cichlid is another oscar like intelligent fish thats very owner responsive and colourful and also relatively peaceful

Hmm, well I was looking around and I can't find anywhere that sells the pearsis anyways, and I would prefer not to order them online. There is a place in my area with young(1inch-1 1/2 inch) chocolate cichlid juveniles for about 5$ each. I might try one in my 110 gallon with my other juvy.

Tank upgrade won't be a big deal. :)

thanks for the help so far guys

Pearseis are cool, if you upgraded to a 75-90 gallon aquarium later on you could house one.
