CICHLID AGGRESSION HELP??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with this.
My rule of thumb with cichlids, is a "minimum" of 10 gallons per inch of adult.
And this really only applies to lazy lurker types, for something pelagic like Pbass, that need room to run, more is not unreasonable.

Also others may disagree but since your pbass is already stressed adding the sd's may make feeding worse. They are aggressive eaters (like lawn mowers really) between them and your oscar the pbass might not het his share.

Max size has nothing to do with a bass in a 120g. They are active open water predators unlike a lot of other cichlids, so need a good deal of swimming space. They also shouldn't be kept with more aggressive cichlids, because they stress very easily. I would separate them or get a much bigger tank.

I doubt I'd be able to get a larger tank, would there be enough space if I got rid of the Oscar? Even so the owner said if she ever outgrew my tank he'd buy her back.

Your fish isn't being a "douche", it is behaving like most large cichlids do. I would rehome the PBass for reasons mentioned by other members, and keep the Oscar.

keep the oscar, much cooler fish imo, and it will fit the tank better and be harder to sell. the bass belongs in a huge community and someone will hopefully take her on who can better care for her with lots of swimming space. plus no-one would want another large o being shipped from home to home and not being maintained properly, 1 large o will be fairly happy cruising around in a 120g. how did you end up with two large fish crammed in you tank, shouldve sold 1 to get the other really pal.

there you go then imo you need a 180g for a lone female kel minimum... you wont find many experience members on here advising adding more fish, its stupid to do that, your waterchanges must be 80% twice a week or something right?

either sell the bass or get a 220g!-) not attacking ya just giving sound advice pal...

Seems like a good Idea. Silver dollars have little bioload. But how many should I put four or so? And what kind, I heard red hook dollars get pretty large so I'm not entirely sure. THANKS!

This is a bad idea. Your tank is pretty crowded as is. Adding some giant red hooks, which belong in a tank no less that 6' long, will just ruin water quality.
And I don't even think of adding smaller species like spotted silver dollars. Might as well take your money and flush it because those little guys well become snacks.

Would a 300 gallon be enough? It would literally take up half my room but then again there's no telling if I'll get it or not. It's only $800! If not I'll see if I can get a 180 in the future.

Absolutely. Does it include a stand? If so that a great deal!
