I have an open 55gal. I know majority of CA/ SA cichlids grow far to big to be grown and bred in this size tank. Should I be looking into dwarf cichlids? If so, what steps should be taken to prepare my tank and what are easy fish to start off with?

you can have a jd pair in a 55gal IMO with great filtration. assuming NOTHING else is in it

People here trip out when I say I have a pair of red terros in a 60 but the look fine and have slot of room there. But I agree the jack Dempsey will work. GL

Festae and JDs grow too big. A 55 gallon is only suitable for 1 JD, not a pair. And its jsut ridiculous for a festae pair, its not even suitable for one of them. Go with smaller cichlids, nothing exceeding 6 inches.

my jd pair lives in a 55 gal happily with their babies. IMO a 55 gal is big enough for a pair of Jds or firemouths or a couple pairs of convicts.

another fish that is pretty slow growing, not too big, and really beautiful is the Geen Terrors. Mine male is only about 6" or 7" with the female staying around 5". Great personality, and can stick up for themselves.
