Cichlid Fight?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got home this morning from work and fed my cichlids as always then about five min later this started!
I started filming about 1 minute into this "Fight"!

Are they fighting or what I have had these guys for about a month an a half and this is the first time I have seen this behavior.

Yep it looks like they are trying to sort out who's boss they look like both males and jockeying for the alpha male spot.. it doesn't look too violent.. at any rate keep an eye on them..

I have vented both of them and they are females (Unless I got some bad info on how to vent) but they are fine now and following each other around as usual.

Its a 55 Gallon tank and there are only 5 Yellow labs (two 2", three 1") and 2 Albino Red Top Zebras (one 3" and one 1") for a total of 7 cichlids.
Is that understocked for mbuna?

One really pressed the others button eh? I was watching how adept they were at avoiding each others mouths. Very interesting vid thanks for posting it.
Your welcome.

I thought this was how cichlids fight!

LOL looks like someone needs some space.........I've seen both of those vids in my tanks more times than I can count but the death toll stays the same....zero

electric yellows and other types (but I see it more in the younger electric yellows) do this all the time!! In my tank even females do this it's all about the heirarchy... don't worry though electric yellows tend to be less deadly than other types I've had a couple male & female mbunas and peacocks fight to the death in my tank I used to have 2 electric yellow males but once I put females in they started fighting too often and I felt bad for the less dominant male so i brought him to the lfs (wish I hadn't now but thats another story).. if it is 2 males and there are females around when they get bigger the fighting will get worse, the lip locking will probably happen soon enough as well...
Looks pretty harmless and it is good entertainment right?!

Cool Video! Yea, Africans will fight...even to music. LOL!

One question could they be fighting over a Male?
because I woke up just now and the yellow lab with the darker black fins is holding.

<<<< That one. (she is bigger than that now)

I am positive that both of the ones that were fighting are female.
