Even if we highly suspected that the fish in question IS A. macracanthus...not having actual provenance on the fish should keep it from any kind of a breeding program or it being positively identified for later sale or trade (or pictures even).
I think the chance of anyone local ever even heard of any amph other than trimac, red devil or Midas is zero to none, wouldnt be trying to source further specimen for breeding so there's no worries there lol...
It's just such an odd fish I was curious.
Looking at it next to my carpintis I would think it's definitely a Texas cross, anyhow "mutt" it is then.
Astatheros macracanthus won't win any competitions for the most colourful cichlid, however spawning dress and behaviour is the most interesting aspect when keeping these fish.
They have a range on the Pacific side from Mexico to Honduras, however they have also possibly been reported in areas of the Grijalva and Motagüa drainage that run towards the Atlantic side.
