What makes them fade? I've usually only seen red devils that are already red when I get them.

Red devils as juveniles are most usually white and gain color as they age.
Not sure what makes them fade, yours may or may not? I grew one out a few years ago, "In my Profile Pic" Who tured out to be a Beast, would attack my hand when I preformed water changes & moved the decor, I regretfully got rid of him, Wish I never did! Awsome fish when mature, Good Luck!
