Why not, rather than waste them, I've eaten many cichlids even those I've kept when in the states.
If they've been mortally wounded in a fight, or mishap, rather than just throw them in the trash, or prolong a lengthy death in a tank, I'll give then a quick death, and sauté a couple fillets up.
Feed any left over bits to the remaining tank residents, and compost the rest.
Although here in Panama, where fishing is the major income producer of the island, there is a natural sort of partnership worked out in the bird/human food chain, where nothing is wasted.
My neighbors prefer needle fish, and sell other fish like red snapper to us gringos..

And have a partnership with the local birds.

After about 5 minutes, not much is left.

i feel like needlefish and houndfish are very underappreciated. Everywhere but the states they are popular, especially in japan if I remember correctly
