LOL, very true, good point!

I would not use wiki either, and I didn't reccomend it.

Cichlid Room Companion's Cichlid Catalogue is a good resource, but it goes by genus.

I just linked the first google link for "Cichlid Common Names"

The point that I was trying to make was there are lists like this that exsist elsewhere.

I will probably regret this but I joined the site and went through and have made several corrections already. H. carpintis only grows to 6"? That's interesting LOL. Someone had midas and red devil backwards when they were trying to describe how to tell the difference between the 2. The had the characteristics right but had them applied backwards.

But anyway....don't wanna derail the thread. :)

agreed....some fish have multiple nicknames such as Nandopsis haitiensis...the Haitian cichlid, Odo or Black Nasty...all 3 names referring to the same fish.

If those names are for the same fish then it's nice to know. Perfect! Nothing wrong with that..

I sure dont know all of them..

There are dozens of sites that have lists of cichlid common names, here is one.

Many fish have multiple common names, some have none. It is eaiser to use google than to try and make an all inclusive list
hey that's pretty tight. A lot of them!

All even remotely common fish in the aquaria trade have common names. They are MUCH easier to remember and classify, rather than their latins. It can get confusing since 1 fish can have multiple nicknames, But I think they are slowly working themselves out. Like how nobody calls a Trimac a 3 spotted cichid anymore.
