I have had my 60 gallon tank set up for about 6 months now. I have 3 Oscar cichlids and I have two Marineland filters. I have never had any problems with my water or my fish. I bought another bigger cichlid and I start having issues with one of my cichlids. Over the past week I have noticed chunks of his skin missing and pieces of his fins are gone. I’m not sure if the new guy is aggressive and picks on him or if it is something I need to be concerned about. He does not act any different and he still eats the same.

I’d assume it’s a aggression/territorial dispute Would separate and likely permanently. Add some salt to the tank 1tsp per gallon. Cont to keep the water clean. Looks very superficial and good thing is it’s eating. Post updates as things progress.

Yes I am leaning more towards aggression as well. He was the first fish I ever got and he has been with me with no problems until I added the other fish. I will separate and see if it improves. Is the salt serving as a skin healer/protectant? I have some stress coat in the ‘medicine cabinet’ if I should use that?

You can do either or with either salt or stress coat. The salt stimulates slime coat production and helps to keep infections away.

Ok thank you for your help. I will keep this thread updated! Do I just pour the salt in the tank or should I take some of the water out and mix it first?

I usually pour into the tank

Sorry for the loss.

A 60 gal is too small for the 3 oscars alone, without adding any other cichlids.
That said, since do not say what kind of cichlid you added, my judgement may be off, but most oscars are not equip to deal with the aggression intensity of most North or Central American cichlids, even in a decent size tank, so if it was one of those, the oscars death is not surprising.
