Cichlid shot

I have seen those on newer tanks. I bought a used acrylic w/ the internal overflows, but they have regular PVC as the stacks. I wonder if I can cut slots into them to create silencers?
 
This is a shot further back including the Christmas tree and the fish on top of the canopy.

I give it three thumbs up!!!!!!! Yes, one of my friends was born with three thumbs!!!! Very pretty cichlids.
