cichlid stock for 150 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yea rtm is one of my favorite cichlids. Only comes in second to the vieja argentea. Its just so hard to find the argentea in my area. So i decided to base my tank around the rtm. I have read about the aggression the rtm has but i thought maybe its the same as other cichlids. Like the red devil and festae which i both own at the moment and havent seen too much aggression from either. My hybrid cichlids in the tank are more aggressive than them lol

Yeah, the RTM I had was in with Festae . The poor guys just got beat down pretty bad. That's why I ended up re-homing the RTM. She was such a good looking female too super Red even at an early stage. Just too damn mean. Currently my two Festae are in a 125 with a jag and all is well. Although the Jag will eventually end up in a different tank, but there is peace for now.

Yea my first few fish in my 150 was a female festae a red devil and a jag. I dare not say what is in my 150 gallon right now because i rather not get flamed for over stocking my tank with 10 fish between 6 - 10 inches. Yet in my defence half those fish are rescue fish. If i didnt take them in they were going to be given to a guy who crams fish in small 10 gallon tanks.

So after looking around and checking different cichlids in my area. Im thinking beani, black nasty, black diamond cichlid or a cuban cichlid( not all together) as possible tank mates. Anyone have any experience with any of the fish stated?

All beautiful fish, however off the bat I can say (not from experience) the black nasty is a no. They need much warmer water than most fish (85 degrees or so I think). For black diamond cichlid are you referring to paratilopia polleni/bleekeri? If so they are fantastic fish, but I'm not sure how well it'll mix with the RTM.

Yea the polleni is what im talking about. I was hoping they would work well. But I might just buy a couple anyways and see how it goes. If it doesnt end well i have other tanks that can hold the cichlids in. My old fish i have a buyer lined up so wont be long till i add some new fish.

The Cuban could work though possibly. I never personally kept one. But I've heard they hold their own. I find that all and all really there is no foolproof way of knowing until you try it sadly. But Cichlids are such individual animals with various personalities that it's tough to blanket judge them.
