cichlid stunted growth

I was alluding to the notion that if he's not eating and he won't top out in size because of that all the water changes and stuff would feel like a waste of time , not that the hobby is. Waste of time it's just that I have a 125 mostly for him

do not be to sure a male. at 10" as you say would expect more pointed trailers on a male and not as tall. either way even for a male or female 10" in a year and a half good growth. they are not Oscars. female top out 9 to 12" male 14 to 16" all things being =.

Not a waste of time to give a fish a big tank and some clean water.

Just be patient man.

I feel you. I really do. I wanted my midevil to turn into a monster. He's at least 2 years old and about 10-11". And seems to be content at that size lol.

If six months down the line he is still 10" then I wouldn't expect too much from him. I'm pretty sure it's a male btw. I've never seen a female with color like that. Sometimes these lfs fish have really bad genes. Example: I have a syno (feather fun) cat that I've had for 3 years. Was about 2" when I bought him... He's about 6" now. Wtf. I certainly didn't do anything to stunt his growth. But after some research I found that sometimes these farm breed red fish are prone to stunting and illness etc. but also take into account he isn't eating much which will play a HUGE factor in his growth rate.

On the plus side he a real stunner. Even if he doesn't turn into a monster he looks awesome.

why frustrating? its a healthy looking jag no mater the size. my female a little over 2 years and about 8", my male almost 2 years and a little over 9" . they have spawned 5 times now. both wild caught from rapps. your fishes growth rate is good. give it time man. and do not slack on care because YOU are not happy with him,

everyone's giving sound advice and opinions thus far... in terms of being frustrating though I think I know where J and P is coming from.... Because he said in his other posts that the fish used to eat a well and now its not... My big male Jag(now dead) was was the only of my stock that was picky about food and ate the least and it bothered me .. I typically feed once or twice a day and all my fish that I have behave and react in a manner that if I were to feed them multiple more times a day they would still eat...., j&p, you have mentioned that you feed live minnows once in awhile I was thinking maybe you shouldn't because maybe you're smart jag is holding out for those and in order to get him completely adapted to whatever other pellets you want to give him... It might take not feeding minnows or anything else for a while to break him back....

Not unusual for a nearly 2 year old 11" jag to quit eating. Mine stopped eating for about 1 month and didnt look skinny. Then it started to eat pellets again.
