Cichlid Water Issues

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Also, 1 more quick question. 10% isn't enough to make much of a difference, what percent would you suggest at weekly water changes?

At least 50%, I do anywhere from 50% to 80%. The more heavily the tank is stocked the more frequent the water changes should be, more water should be changed, or a combination of both.

If you think about it, most fish in the wild get 100% water change every few seconds. We can't copy that but we can find a happy medium. I do 75% water changes every third day.

Those hardcore discus breeders who do 100% water changes 3 times a day are the closest anyone will get to recreating the wild.

Those discus breeders change a ton of water, because most feed beef heart to pump up their juvenile fish. As a long time discus breeder once told me, warm water + beef = beef soup. Not exactly recreating the wild, water or otherwise.

^^ LOL holy crap man I don't think those discus were luvin on that. I could just see my ex wifes face if id of dumped 100's of gallons of water on the floor LOL

I agree with the others about more and larger water changes.
On small tanks like yours more, is always better, and very easy.
I normally do a 30% to 40% water changes every other day, on hundreds of gallons of tanks.
Also, never throw away biomedia, swish it around in old water to remove grunge and put it back.
The most important component of filtration for the health of your fish is from the population of beneficial bacteria that live on biomedia, without it the tank water becomes toxic with ammonia.
The mechanical filtration is basically for "your" atheistic enjoyment, but hardly important for fish health.

You should go to your lfs and ask them for an old sponge filter or any old filter and han squeeze out the gunk from the old filter into your tank it will jump start your cycle and help build up the bb colony fairly quick
