so i got some nice big rocks in the tank 2 days ago for my cichlids i got about 3 days ago they are about an inch to 2 inches long. I was wonder why do they go to a corner and swim up and down in groups of 8-12. i have 25 in the tank and my tank is a 180 gal. any thoughts

same thing happens to me with African Cichlids. I drives me nuts. I don't know why they do it, but it has kept them out of my tanks for many years.
Young Cichlids tend to do this. It's juvenille behavior which will stop as they get older, mature and start to pair off and or develop territorys.
You see this very often when you start a new tank, and put in a group of fish.
It's just a new environment for them, and the have to explore it first, normally in a 3 or 4 day it's over.
Its something else when there are already cichlids in the tank, the new fish just go with the flow then.

They also do it after a nice water change. It is neutral behavior when they swim togther like that. Pretty soon they will start setting up their own territoty. Or after a water change, soon enough go back to guarding their territories.
