I have a 40 gallon breeder that I have been setting up for the past few months. I used to have some cichlids, and would like some again! I was reading an article on Texas cichlids in TFH Magazine, and they sound like good fish, would they do well in a 40B? It said they usually stay in the 6" range, and with a 18" width in a 40, I was guessing it would be fine. Kribs, yellow labs, and rams are also on my list if TX cichlids don't work out.

Texas cichlids can easily get up to 12 inches. I had one up to 11 inches before trading it in. Firemouths, Convicts and Blue Acaras are a few smaller ones

African cichlids are way too run of the mill lol get a breeding pair if convicts or hrps or sajica cichlids

convicts are waay over-rated and are basially pest cichlids now ( my oppinion and a few others lol, not to be offended ), i would do africans ( do the hardier, not to common to find species )

A bunch of Texas would definitely get too big for that tank. You could probably do one if you wanted but I would say as a species tank it wouldn't work.

Texas cichlids grow much too large to be placed in a 40 gallon...

I'd go with some Convicts, Firemouths, Jewel Cichlids, or various species of African Cichlids. You could really turn your tank into a nice african community!

Texas get too large, 1 would live there for a while, but probably not tolerate any other fish in such a small space.
Cryptoheros nanoluteus stay fairly small and have color, you could keep 6 in a 40 gal, with lots of filtration, and regular water changes.

or a group of Gymnogeophagus might work, as they stay small.

maybe 1 male and 3 females

I keep pseotropheus saulosi in mine. Very active, plus males an females both look good.
