Cichlids help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If I was you I would look to choose which species are your favourites, as others have said there is quite a mixture and apart from requiring different water chemistry most of them won't be compatible for very long.
Odds are the two jewels are a pair/pairing which will create carnage when they spawn and given the size of the aquarium casualties are in the future. The Parrot will seriously outgrow the tank. With such a small aquarium the zebra could also be far too aggressive once it puts on a little size and becomes established. The Brichardi will breed like crazy once they get going but may not be able to stand up for themselves and as a result will be very rarely seen.
All of the species are beautiful once mature but most of them will need more space.
Once you decide on the way you would like to go with the stock I would be happy to help you with any of their setup requirements and stocking.

Hi, I'm not sure on the dimensions, don't have a tape measure to hand. I do know it's a 300 ltr though. Thank you for your info!

Thanks for your response. The parrot and the 2 other jewels are fine. They swim about happily, having boisterous moments, they eat fine and generally look healthy. Its just one of the jewels that has turned grey and seems unhappy. Is there a ph suitable to keep them all happily together?

I just remember when we got it, there was a bottle of stress coat that had UK,US gallons written down on the inside of the box, so I assumed that's what it was. My husband measured the tank and it came out as similar. I'll get the measurements off him later. It is rather a tall tank! We originally had our own tank that requires a base, however when we asked our friend to make one, he'd sealed the deal on the huge tank we now have. It cost £100. Glad to have helped the fish too as the guy that originally owned it, used to flush fish down the loo if he didn't approve of them. Made me mega angry! Sorry, went off course there ha!

The tank looks like it could be around that size, tall and wide footprint or something like that. Anything over about 60 gallons/225 liters should be okay for this stock in my opinion.
These fish do like different pH. The Jewel cichlids like it lower, with a bit softer water, while the lake Malawi fish you have (yellow, blue ones) like hard water with a high pH. The Blood parrot is a hybrid mutant fish, with no real way to know what pH the parents would have preferred.
With that said, these fish are all probably captive bred and pretty adabtable to pH. I would say whatever your pH comes out of the tap, don't bother trying to alter it, unless it is crazy high like 9, your fish are probably already used to it. The jewel that is grey, I would assume is probably just the bottom of the totem pole, and is not showing dominant colors.

Thank you for your response. They all seem happy. The dull one flared up yesterday and had a little kiss with the female but has since dulled again and she has since returned to the other make and looks ready to breed again today which is a good sign. I have done a lot of research and my husband has started calling me a finish enthusiast as I can't get enough of them. Love watching them! Thanks again :-)
