A pair of convicts. I know it would kinda be pushing it but females are super small so I should be okay if there is no aggression.
 
Hmmm...convicts are OK, but firemouths are not?
 
If wanted to do FMs you could only get 1. you could get some small plecos and fast schooling fish with it. It is just that female Fm don't get super small like female convicts.

If you are new to the hobby, I would avoid rams for the time being. I made this beginners mistake and ended up causing both my Bolivian Rams a lot of stress. They are the hardier (than the Blue Ram) of the two but a lot of work as they are really sensitive. From one newb to another :)

I would start off with some regular tropicals and get a pair or trio of corydoras. I love my Corys, and my small school of albino tiger barbs are just great. My tigers were my guinea pigs but they've stuck around :D
