Cichlids in a 30gal tank, doable?

Depends on the fish.
I've got a little over 60 fish (Inverts included) in a 10-Gallon with plenty of room. But, most are fry. It does amaze me though.

Shell-dweller Cichlids tend to stay small, and you can have a fairly large group in a 30-Gallon, depending in the species. Just an idea.

Convict, Firemouth, Cuban Cichlid (very cool), Blue Ram, Bolivian Ram, a few Dwarf, Pike Cichlids Salvinis, Angelfish, Severums, Herotilapia all can go in a 30g. Red Cap Geos only get to about 6", so with heavy filtration, it could work.

Cubans, Salvini, Anglefish and Severums are all pretty poor choices for 30G, it's just too small . . . ditto for the Geos, and not sure about Pike cichlids either . . .

the rest are all safe bets . . .

Nothing cooler than seeing a pair of cichlid's breeding habits. Get a pair of convicts.

Also, look into Melanochromis auratus, and Calvus Cichlids
