CICHLIDS IN FLORIDA RIVERS?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
did you know one of chinas invasive species are bluegill. looks like fish end up everywhere. i heard a chinamen came over here and had some bluegill and thought it was delicious so since china consumes a ton of fish he thought it would be a good idea to take a bunch over to china and have a bluegill farm or pay for someone to do it and raise bluegill for a delacacy but it never took off. chinese people were not that thrilled with them and they found there way into there waters and now they are a invasive species over there. im not sure i have the story exact but its something like that.

In Madagascar they INTRODUCED largemouth bass for sport fishing........that plus deforestation silting up the rivers plus a bunch of similar lunacy has pretty much destroyed their ecosystem forever.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned the burmese and rock python epidemic in the Everglades. Does anyone know if the recent freeze has impacted their populations? As much as I like constrictors, I certainly hope so.

It is situations such as these that get politicians itchy about introducing legislation restricting the sale of foreign species. I think that it is the duty of the responsible hobbyist to spread the word against the release of non-native species.

yeah exactly forgot about that n yeah your right, its the same with why we cant take our dogs anywhere anymore loser A*#holes leave the crap laying around and ruins it for the rest of us that are responsible with our pets, i would think they have this in florida too but i know here in NC most small pet stores i see have some kind of sign either by their door or register saying not to release animals into the wild i think there should be some rule that they all should have this, havent seen this at big places like petsmart n petco

There are a lot of cool non natives here (although not positive they don't cause too much noticable harm), alot of SA cichlids, our waters dont get too cold so they make homes here. Many have died do to the recent cold snap about two weeks ago. My tanks are comprised of such fish, I have mayan cichlids, tilapia, plecostamus, peacock bass (rip from the cold snap :(), jaguar cichlids, and although I do not have any oscars are fairly common around here, snakeheads and midas cichlids are found a little further south than me. Also with some monster natives here, florida gar and bowfin are common where I'm at, and further north we have gator gar. Although I lost my pbass in the cold and are not represented in this link you can see the pictures of my fish here http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=302149 and my deceased pbass are in my avatar.

i wonder if people catch them and sell them as wild caught fish with the buyer believing hes getting them from there native land and not florida waters. do jags look any different from florida? i mean if babies grew up in florida waters vs central america waters is there any difference?

i don't believe so, I have two jaguars, they look like everyone elses, the colors arent as prominent on mine, I figure cause i dont feed them expensive color enhancing cichlid food but instead shrimp pellets and minnows from my canal. Also fish tend to change with their environment, Ive seen some really dark ones that live in dark and dark watered canals while some are lighter with less colors and patterns, just depends.
