cichlids rubbing on stuff

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's because of the ammonia. They're suffering from ammonia burn, and it makes them itch. Just keep doing those big water changes!

hey whats up i got the nitrite an nitrate test kits today an some bacteria sulement.
my nitrite is 0 ppm an my nitrate is like 10 or maybe 20 i dont remember off the top of my head. i added some more of the top fin amonnia remover an i figured i would change 10 or 15 gallons tommorrow

I would just keep doing really big water changes. You'll see ammonia and then there will be no ammonia on the tests. Then, nitrite will do the same thing -- show up and then drop back down to zero. When you've got zero ammonia and nitrite, then the tank is cycled. The nitrate really shouldn't be as high as you say if you're doing the water changes you mentioned in the other post -- so that worries me, but it is the smallest problem right now. What you're seeing is normal when fish are exposed to ammonia, and though I've never had ammonia burn, I imagine it's awful -- it probably burns their eyes, gills, skin, everything -- so try and keep ammonia as low as possible through water changes.

Cool. It sounds like you're doing the right stuff. It takes different fish different amounts of time to really be affected by it. They have the same reaction to Nitrite or high Nitrate, so this might go on for a while until the tank is finally cycled.

I'm usually on MFK, or at least checking pretty often. I'm pretty addicted LOL. So, just PM me if you have any other questions -- even if I'm not on MFK, my e-mail will let me know if you've PM'd. I'll add you as a friend so you can find me easily. You're welcome for the help, and have a good night's rest!
