I agree cichlids are pretty smart they are like dogs some i'm going to teach my oscars how to roll over that would be neat.

They are smart, I put in floating hikari for my cichlids first to eat then stick my hand in the tank to scare them away when I try and feed the polypterus sinking massivore, they run away from my hand, but way their options and still try and sneek a few sinking pellets away, this has become their daily ritual. Even when they see the white bag they are so happy. I sware they can see color and know that the white bag is the bag with the good stuff and are willing to sneak past the killer hand to grab a a quick treat to eat! hahaha
definitely smart. my GT used to do a dance and go mental until you looked at him. once you stared at him he would stop, if you stopped looking at him it would start again. all he wanted was attention.
my midas took a very short time to become brave enough to take food sticks from my fingers, i guess he worked out i wasnt going to hurt him. i put tankmates in and he sulked and stopped "speaking" to me for a few days. even now he gets annoyed if i look at the others and chases them from my fingers on the glass.

i used to have a 6ft tank by my bed for my female dovii when i used to let my dog up on the bed with me, she used to skitz out bashin the glass everytime i patted moose, soon as i stopped and looked at her she stopped, but then moose would get jealous and demend attention, a visious cycle

i know a guy who´s oscar just laid down on his side and refused to eat when the guy put the christmastree in the room where the tank was. when he removed the tree the oscar went back to his normal behaviour... so I guess christmas can be really depressing even for fish.
the smartest I have is my male GT. I used to think that he just saw people and thought that he was getting food. I realized, after a while, that he didnt pay any attention to people who dont feed him on a regular basis.
im tellin you guys i know exactaly what your all talking about, my tex is the funniest to watch for instance right now im typing this to you guys and hes at the side of his tank watching me, and the second one of my jacks or convicts tries to come by the glass he will flare his gills and push them.... and if i clean his tank, ussualy he will just bump my fingers and swim by where he rubs himself against me, but lets say i cleanhis tank after days of ignoring him. he gets mad at me and flares his gills at me.. till i make a fist in water lol than he knows to swim into his conrer till im done cleaning.. but its almost like hes saying im mad at you.... there was even one instance where i bought him a mayan cichlid as a tank mate and the mayan was new to the tank and went to attack my hand when cleaning, next thing i know tex swam over and started attacking the mayan, than he stayed by my hand and everytime the mayan came to bite me hed go at him again, kinda like saying "your stupid stop attacking the hand that feeds us" lol i was so confused till i replayed it in my head later lol so yes i think cichlids are deff way smarter than we all think....
