Cichlids @ TN Aquarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
AAHHH, gotta love the Chattanooga Aquarium. I haven't been since they opened the second building.

And correct me if I'm wrong but I think Chattanooga is the largest in the US(amount of FW gallons). Definitely worth it if you are passing through. They don't do the dive tours but they do have a behind the scenes tour where they show you the filtration system, the ingredients in their homemade frozen fish food and you get to go to the top floor and feed the BIG TANK.

nice pics! Love those cichla! thanks for sharing :D

cichla and piranha

Thanks all for the comments on the pics.

OMG wow I just S*** lol. Thats what I want! I want cichlid GALORE! You know how many gallons? Fish look extremely healthy. Usually you'll see a huge Parachromis but it's got some sort of infection or somewhat grimy ( beatup) lookin but damn great specimens! I know where I am going over Christmas Vacation.

I do not know how many gallons the exhibit was but it was sufficient to keep the aggression in check, for all the pairs that have been set up. I know what you mean, I have seen a lot of specimen that have some sort of fungus due to poor up keeping of the tank, but that is certainly not the case here. All of the fish look extremely happy and healthy, and you can see very less, if any, damages to the fins.

You should go there if you like cichlids - trust me you won't be disappointed. Only this exhibit is worth the trip & the cost of tickets :-)

i wonder if they do behind the scenes dive tours like a GA aquarium

I am not sure, but I have seen divers in the salt water aquarium. I would not want to go into this tank thats full of all these cichlid parents though :D

wondering how big are all those fish

I am bad at guessing, but most of them seemed adults. The doviis as you can see are huge - though I can not tell you a number (i.e., in inches).

Yes, I think thats true.
And to add to that, I have seen the aquariums in Atlanta and Baltimore and I feel they have been hyped up a lot. I can say hands down, Chattanooga aquarium is much better, and more enjoyable.
By the way, thanks for telling me abt. the behind the scenes tour - it would be amazing to see the kind of filtration they have in the back.

u got any pix of this monster????

I saw that "thing" the first time since you pointed it out - I don't know what it is! This pic. was taken when I was on my way to cichlid exhibit, so I wanted to save all my good shots for it and ended up taking very few of the gar exhibit.

man that display is incredible, those blackbelts look stunning as do the jags
:)
I wanted to take BBs and jaguars for a change this time around, but you can not see past the male doviis in there. They are *that* good.
