Cichlids with livebearers ?

I would also agree that the size tank (40 breeder) is way too small for anything other than the smallest cichlids. If that's what you used for others in the past, its not surprising there were aggression issues.
My choice for that size tank would also be Cryptoheros nanoluteus as far as Central Americans go.

they are right size for the tank, beautiful, non-aggressive, and available from places like Wet Spot
 
Thanks for the reply my aggression issues actually did not start until I moved my pair to a 125 for some reason. In thier 29 gallon grow out they seemed to get a longe pretty well. The 125 had a ton of other fish I was growing out at the time I believe so maybe that's why? Nano's are a cool fish I just worry they will not be as personable as some of thier larger cousins.

In my experience, a 40 breeder is on the small size for centrarchus (on of my favorite fish). If you were to eventually have a pair form, there just isn't enough room for the female to get away. A 75 would be much more comfortable.

Cryptoheros are a much better choice for a tank that size. If you are interested, I've got some F1 septemfaciatus from Limon (fry from w/c parents that Rapps imported a couple of years ago). They are a nice, rather uncommon fish that would fit well in your set up. My pair is very low key. I put them in a 20 long to quarantine when I got them years ago, and they spawned quickly so I left them in the tank with their spawn. I probably have 8 or so juvies that have grown up with their parents with no issues.

Thanks Jon! My pair was from your stock I believe and I believe you got yours from Dogofwar's wild pair right? Most beautiful strain of centrarchus I have ever seen. I would have to agree with you, my centrarchus pair had issues even in my 125 especially as the male got older. I am going to research septemfaciatus and get back to you thanks.
 
Not that you would, but some people confuse septemfasciatus with myrnae.
I was able to keep a mated pair of mynae in a 75 gal with swordtails, even after they spawned for an extended period.


and because of their slow growth, able to keep panamense in a 60 gal.
 
duanes duanes Yea i've noticed that searching the web. I have also noticed that septemfasciatus can look quite different.

Is one breeding color or what. I have also seen some that have a lot of yellow I am assuming those are Myrnae? J jonclark96 which ones do yours look like? Do you have pics?
 
Greetings OP! I've had a small shoal of Thorichthys Helleri housed with Diamond Tetras and Koi Swordtails in a 40 long for about six months with no problems! The cichlids are colorful, very entertaining and relatively mellow.
