Cichlids with tropical fish

Rams and convicts probably won't work together...basically Ram will get stressed out and die.

If you are starting out, I suggest convicts and maybe firemouth together; also save yourself some trouble and only get convict females...prettier and you won't want them to breed in your tank; or you will end up with a tankful of convicts

the convict won't kill the ram it depends on the overall individuals and how much room and territories they have. I grew out a FH with community fish and a few less aggresive cichlids until the FH hit about 6" and I sold it. no casualties.

with enough space and get the fish all small they can get along, that tank also had a brown knife fish, blood parrot and rainbow fish

i my self tried ram with convicts in a 20 gallon convicts almost killed it.
correct the orange or pink belly on a female and they will be a little bigger then males

The coloration of the belly shows up on females at a small size as long as they are in good condition at the store. If I were you I would choice either a con or rams if that is what you are interested in. Less stress for a cichlid beginner then trying both in the same tank. Cons have great personalities and rams are fun to watch but I would keep a small group of them 4-6.

while possible, this is not likely. I tried to house a 3" convict in a 90 with a ram and a crib and it didnt work at all, not even for a day really. If I were to bet money, even if the con doesnt outright kill the ram it'll stress the fish out toi the point where it'll probably stop eating. Just my experience here of course, but i did it and I wouldnt again. This same con claimed the whole 90 gallons and eventually had to be moved to a much larger tank

Barbs + Rams = Nipped Ram fins, possible death through stress.

Barbs + Convicts = Dead Barbs.

Rams + Convicts = Dead Rams.

Just my opinion, and in my experience that is :)

Oh I'm not saying its something that is easily done, I know that the temprement of the FH was pretty mild and he just tolerated the other fish. I'm pretty sure if I kept him for longer he wouldve destroyed all the tankmates.
I'm just saying that, thats what I achieved and that it is possible to get away with such a thing just very unlikely
