Hello monsterfishkeepers, zenyoungkoh here. I have never own a cichlid before. I currently have a 55 gallon turtle tank with 1 rosy red minnow. I am planning to get a convict cichlid (or any small aggressive cichlids) Do u have any other recommendations besides convict?? my turtle lives in a rubbermaid container without substrate. If i get a convict i might get another one and breed them. Is it possible to get them to breed without substrate. I'll provide the terra cotta flower pot though.....

Is your turtle trained to eat live fish? If it isn't then it'd be fine but the only issue would be that you'll need lots of filteration due to the amount of waste the turtle produces.

it could be fine for a while, but the turtle will not hesitate to take a bit out of fish if given the chance. Does this tank have land portion and all the other reqs. for turtles?

i dont think your container is large enough, also depends on what type of turtle you have and how big it is. a 55g container set-up for turtles would only have like 30g of water and this is a very small volume to deal with the massive waste of a turtle and fish. also i think cons stay too small to be safe with a grown turtle unless its like a musk turtle or something like that, that stays small. if you want to have a chance of this working you will need a much larger tank and get a larger growing cichlid that is already pretty much the same size or only slightly smaller than the turtle

My turtle do eat live fish. Its a RES. the 55 gallon tank is just a temporary setup. Shes going in a 180 hopefully by August. Right now i have a HOB filter that does 265 gph rated for 80 gallon. My turtle is now 5.5 inches. SHe has a turtle dock and lights etc. What are the most aggressive cichlids that max at 6 inches?

yeah if its an RES then a con def stays too small, do you not already have the 180 set-up or something? if its already set-up then i would go ahead and put her in there and then get an already larger specimen of a more aggressive cichlid like a midas or something. not sure about turtles that stay under 6in and are aggressive, but painted turtles should do well with larger fish, thats what i was wanting to do and may still do it but not sure, and i think there is a certain type of painted that only gets like 6-7in, and painteds aren't as big of piscivores as RES are and have more coloration as well, though nothing beats the personality of an RES they just get very large

i meant a cichlid under 6 inches. but thanks anywayy!!! i'll think about it now

yeah any cichlid, no matter how aggressive will not stand a chance against a full grown RES, especially if its a female

i had a 135 gal with 2 yellow bellied sliders with a grown salvini and a young wild caught mayan and pleco all together with no probs even with the turtles eating live fish.
