I'd recommend you go to a local fish/pet store and observe and maybe take notes on the species that interest you there. Then come here and ask if they're compatible, can live in the tank for life, and any other things you may need/want to know.

No such thing. Maybe a texas is close. Try central and south american like convicts, firemouths, rams, keyholes, anything that doesn't get bigger then 6''.
