Cichlids?

Id suggest some synodontis catfish. Maybe some cuckoo catfish (synodontis multipunctatus) they live around mbuna in the wild and mine bullied my yellow labs. They are VERY active and swim in groups if kept thst way. +they use mouth brooders as their hosts so you could get some babies. They sell for a lot too. My lfs offered me 15$ per catfish if I ever breed them. According to my book, 10" is max size in the wild, but it also says they usually stay half that size in captivity.

+1 on the synodontis they work perfectly with your malawi cichlids as they live togteher in the wild.

As for the fish you already have; Yellow labs are great, you will not have any problems with them at all, get a few more and they will do well. The bumble bee can be a bit of a pain in the bum literally as the are typically more aggressive, so I would stick with only the one. Also the Johanni can be a bit of a head banger again stick with one. If you want to add some more colour look at some Metriaclima Estherae, they are popular easy to fins and similar in aggression level to your labs. They also come in a great range of colours from pink, red, pearl and blue. so perfect for a kids room.

The livingstonii (giraffe colour) will get quite big at 10" and may be a bit big for your tank, where as the other fish you have will all only reach 4"-6".

One other thing to mention is the lab, bumble bee and johanni are all algae grazers so feed a good quality vegetarian diet, spirulina flake is perfect. They dont do well on high protein foods like blood worm, brine shrimp and these should be avoided.

B :)

Thanks for that. I may end up getting rid of the linvingstonii, then. As for food, I usually feed NLS, but I'll pick up some spirulina, and start looking at syndonitis.

maybe you should have this moved to the african cichlid forum.
Some of the africans are crazy aggressive. but you are ahead of the game with a large tank.

I have a male mbuna kenyi and he is the smallest total glass banger that I have ever seen. LOL! Can't put anything else with him (without a divider), bcuz I don't want to do the heavy stocking method in his small tank.
He attacks any hand by the glass, and has removed skin from my finger in the tank.
On the UP side though, my 1 yr old grandson is absolutely fascinated by him. He LOVES watching a bright yellow fish come flying out of the cave to chase his hand across the glass. It's hilarious!

I use the community formula. I feed it to my loaches, angels, corys, and now these new cichlids.
