Cinder Block Strength? emergency!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Have to aggree with the earthquake advice and even expand on it a bit. One of the other failings of the block stands is that each individual block is easy to damage and if one of the shatters you could very easilly lose the whole tank.

It wouldn't require a big quake to shatter a block stand either. I'm seen relitivly minor ones topple block stands. It's all a question of what you concider to be an acceptable level of risk.

I don't mean to get technical (well maybe), but I don't believe cinder blocks are made anymore. Blocks are now made made from cast concrete (portland cement and aggregate, usually sand and fine gravel). Cinder blocks were made from coal cinders and portland cement and are very dark in color. I know a lot of people still refer to them as "cinder" blocks, but I just thought I would add my 2 cents of construction background to clarify this point.
No offence intended...:)
Oh Brother... theres one in every crowd :grinyes: but I was gonna mention that as well

I've got my 180g sitting on blocks and wood planks. They are not gonna hold up in a earthquake because they are not anchored together. As far as damaging a block and seeing total stand failure, I would douhgt there is anything is your house that could cause this, except maybe a 15# sledge hammer. Of course I would think most stands would fail if they went up against a sledge hammer.

Best bet is to overlap the blocks with one another, not just stack individual towers. I'll try to find a pic of my set up.

Here are a couple pics of my setup plus the basic block layout I used

When using dial-up, you will need to allow time for the pictures to load before replying to a post:grinno:

Yeah, when the earthqukae hits, just look at the buildings around you that crumble and cower in it's wake. Even if you made it strong enough to withstand the quake, the damn house will cave in and break it anyway.
As far as dial up, I don't know your number, so what's to dial? :):D
