I have (2) 1" to 1.5" convicts in a 20g for now will be moving to a 40g in a couple of months.. I been watching them and it seems the male:chillpill: who is a little bigger always chancing the female around:nilly: is this because of the tank? When I got them home they got ick:( which is going away no spots on them any more used heat and salt treatment works great.. Will this stop once I lower the temp and will she still lay eggs or should I take her back and get a bigger one? trying to breed them for fry to feed my Oscar.. Also there is a Mollie in the tank been in there before them will feed to my O as soon as the ick is gone compeletly..

Thats because they are big enough to breed. My pair are in a 20 gal long and create more fry than McD's.

ive been tryin to breed cons in a 35g and i just cant get a pair, i thnk its just the time of year or somthin, i cant find any anywhere around here.but yeah, ive kinda got the same goal.. desiese free feeders

Its best when first buyin convicts if you want a pair to purchase 6 or 8 juvies and wait for a pair to split, and believe they will. Then remove the rest of the convicts (if not they will be certainly dead after the pair starts breeding). Also, make sure to have plenty of caves and hiding spots because after the pair breed the male tends to get extremly aggressive and the female needs a place to hide.

I'm not doubting you because I've heard the same thing from everyone else but, after hatching the female kept the male hiding in a cave and wouldn't let him out even to feed. I guess she didn't get the memo.

Well if this pair don't take I will wait for another week to ensure the ick is gone then I will go bu 2 more males and 2 more femals and hope for the best This is starting to cost more money then I thought. I will only have 10 days for the pair to seperate because after that the store won't take them back.. My female stays in the top coner of the tank for the most part I have a cave and a couple of other spots to hide they use no of them go figure...

I have 4 pairs of breeding convicts:screwy: One pair the female is so aggressive that she kept the male away from the fry. This was thier fist batch and she is older and as big as the male. This pair is guarding eggs right now and we'll have to see if things change with this batch.

Convicts pair up real easy, just be patient if they are of breeding age it will happens within a couple weeks.

well I will keep you update to date on this.. Is it possible they will start to get along and mate? Or will they just stay separated?

what if I buy like 3 more females and put them in then he can choose maybe? lot easier to take out once they pair up instead of making sure I have the correct two once they pair?

it just seems like every time i see any cons or firemouthes or any fish that breeds easily and stays small they only have a couple, if any LFS around herehad 6 or so id def. buy em up.
