I've been thinking about getting some freshwater clams for my tanks, I'm curious to know about everyone's experiences with them?

They are hard to keep alive ime. Plus its hard to tell if they are dead or not bc they are usually under the sand. Than trhey start rotting in your tank. Cool though

had no issues. stayed alive well over a year before the gar discovered something was in the sand. constantly bit it. no damage to the shell but it had to stay closed most of the time. Iv been thinking of trying to do them again.

I've kept them in the past and advise against it unless you have a lot of green water in your tank... being filter feeders you just don't know when they are getting enough to eat... i had mine in a tank for about a year or two no problems, then one day while cleaning discovered one was dead and boy did it ever smell when i removed...

I have had freshwater clams for a year and a half. they are doing great, I have 35 in a 20 gal with a dozen ghost shrimp, 6 cardinal tetras, and an otocinclus. they stay between 1/2 and 3/4 buried in the gravel every now and then you will see one "walking" with its tongue. when one dies the ghost shrimp love it, they swarm the shell and even when the carcass floats a couple of shrimp will swim up to it and hang upside down on it. even the fish will take a few bites. I only feed the tank twice a day with a pinch of tropical flakes and an occasional algae wafer.
